Communication Update

For the past two years I have been working on getting a communication device so I can tell everyone what I think! We have tried out two different systems and I have been working really hard to do my best. Now my teachers have to do lots of paperwork and send it off so it can be improved by insurance. Hopefully they will make a decision soon. They already said no twice, so we had to do more work to make them say yes. I really hope we worked hard enough this time!

So this is what it looks like...
This is the PRC Communicator
It has eight core words that I am working on: More, Stop, Go, Hello, Mine, Play, On, and Turn. I use a switch to start the scan of these words- that means the computer says each word out loud and then waits 10 seconds before going onto the next word. When it gets to the word I want to choose, I hit my switch and a different voice says the word out loud.
Here is me with the switch above my head
Right now I access the switch with my head. You can see the yellow switch attached to the back of my chair. I can use my feet to push up and hit the switch with my head.

Here is another view of the switch I hit with my head. When I make a choice of one of the words we get to do fun things. Here are some of the activities we might do.

I might choose "Play" and we will use my switch toys to play with. Once I get used to my system I will be able to make more specific choices, and have more words to choose from.
Books
Sometimes we read books, and I can choose them by picking More or Mine. We also play with stuffed animals sometimes, or "Go" for walks. We play music too sometimes, or play with the iPad.

I am really looking forward to working on this device so I can "talk" to my friends, family and teachers. One day everyone will hear all that I know and think!

Winter Adventures

We've had a busy few months this winter- lots of playing in the sun and the snow. Here are some highlights of our adventures...

November
Over Thanksgiving we have lots of traditions. The first is doing the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. It's a 5k race. This year we had fun turkey headbands and hats. My Aunty, Uncle, and little cousins came to run with us. We had a quiet turkey dinner at home and then we got our Christmas tree.

We got to visit Heritage Gardens for the Gardens A Glow event. It was so fun- we made smores, saw the lights and visited Santa.

December

In December we go to take a whole week off of school to go to Florida. We met up with my grandparents and Aunt Krissy in Key West for the first part of our trip. We laid by the pool and saw a GIANT iguana sunning himself. We also went on the Conch Train Tour to learn about Key West.

There is a really fun place in KW called Mallory Square. It has fun music and street performers doing all kinds of fun things. Then we got to see the amazing Key Wet sunset.

After KW we drove in my grandparents huge RV to Sanibel Island, where my Great-Grandma lives. She lives very close to the beach and there are lots of shells. We had Christmas there and saw some cool things.

 January
We came back from Florida in time to celebrate New Year's Eve at First Night in Chatham. In January we also went skiing at Mt. Sunapee. I ride a bi-ski, which allows me to fly down the mountain! You can see videos of my skiing here.
Here is our family getting ready to hit the slopes

February
During February vacation we had a great time in Lincoln, NH. We skiied at Loon Mountain and we were lucky because it was SO warm! We also went to ice castles, which is an amazing structure that is built every year completely out of ice! There were slides and waterfalls and so many icicles! I also went sledding and got to try something I've never done before!

This is the outside of Ice Castles
I got to try out my new sled- FINALLY! We haven't had enough snow on Cape Cod since I got it for Christmas so we brought it to NH. It is so fun! It works great. My dad and mom can ride on the back as we go down the hill.
Then we got to do something AMAZING that I never have done before- SNOWMOBILING! It was so cool. They had a special harness that I could be hooked on to my dad. I really loved when it went fast!
Here we are in our gear on the snowmobile

It's been a great winter so far! There's more to come!

Mom Hijack: RANT

(BEWARE: serious complaining ahead!)

As a general rule of thumb I try not to air my frustrations in a public way, but today I hit a low and I just need to vent. I'm going to allow the time I take writing this to feel sorry for myself and vent about the conundrum it is to have a child with complex needs and to try to make a living. Here goes...

Let me start by saying, I am well aware of the abundances in my life and the mere fact of me even having access to many of the opportunities I'm going to talk about is unthinkable in many places (even in other US states!). However, I also believe that systems are not perfect and they can surely be improved. So...

Over the past year, we have submitted requests to Mass Health for three pieces of equipment:
- A gait trainer (which gives Kai the ability to walk)
- Adaptive communication device
- Toilet chair
(side note: We have primary insurance through employment, but  they do not cover durable medical equipment, thus our need for a secondary insurance for our son).

Of these three pieces of equipment, only one has been approved and deemed medically necessary and that is the toilet chair (thank you!). The adaptive communication device has been denied twice and we are now finishing up a third 8 week trial of a device in order to provide more data. We have been working on this project for two years.

The gait trainer has been denied three times and our only option now is to appeal, which I happily submitted. This week I received a letter stating the date and time of our appeal (which is at an office about 2 hours from our home). The date is very difficult in my calendar due to work constraints, so I called the rescheduling number. I was told that work is not an excuse to reschedule, but I could attend by phone. Unfortunately, that is not going to help me on that particular day. So, options here are:

1. Give up the appeal, which means no gait trainer for Kai.
2. Take off of work (again)

So technically, we could purchase a gait trainer for Kai, which costs between $2-5k. We could put it on a CC, get a loan, do a fundraiser, etc. You could even argue that it is not medically necessary for Kai. I could argue that on numerous points that I won't go into here. But let me put this in perspective for you... Kai also needs a new adaptive bike as he has outgrown his. Certainly this is not a medically necessary item so we need to buy him a bike; just like all other American families. His last bike (and only bike) cost $5,000! I could look for used ones, but because of his needs these items have some customization. So, buying a gait trainer AND a bike seems like a lot right now; especially since state insurance in CA paid for his first gait trainer.

Let me go a little bit into this second option: take off work. I am a former classroom teacher and staff development administrator in public education. Since having my children and moving around due to my husband's job, I decided to seek other opportunities for employment because of the demands related to parenting in general, and the intense needs of Kai. I work two part time jobs, which pay me about 1/3 of what I made in former jobs, but I am happy to take these opportunities as they allow me a lot of flexibility to be there for my kids and also schedule the multitude of appointments for Kai, as well as keep up with his paperwork.

In one of my jobs, I teach a series of 16 lessons (20 min each), twice a week for 8 weeks. I am in the classroom for 3 hours two days a week. Wouldn't you guess that this is exactly when my hearing is scheduled! Of course, I could find a sub, which is complicated because I mentor two new instructors during this time- so I am limited on who can sub for me. But I also have gotten a sub two other times during this 8 week period due to important appointments for Kai. In the grand scheme of things, I could do without the money I earn for those three hours, but honestly- I'm tired of having to make these choices. I am trying to find a way to have a career and take care of my family- and it is really difficult. I know I am not the only one out there trying to do this, but today it just felt overwhelming.

Could I get my husband do attend? Sure, he'd be happy to, but as it happens, he is going to be out of the country on business for 19 days, in a location with a 9 hour time difference. Not sure that is going to work. During this 19 days, Kai has an appointment for his communication device in Boston. When I tried to change this appointment for work, the next available is in October (uh, that's 8 months away!)- so I guess I'll be finding a sub. He also has a sedated MRI after which we get to make really exciting decisions like: Do we implant a device in him to deliver medication to his spinal cord? or Do we drill two burr holes in his brain and implant an electrical device to control his movements? Which needs to be decided before he has major hip surgery to actually form hip sockets because he does not stand and walk enough! (Do you see where the rescheduling of the appeal was the last straw today?)

The fact that Mass Health does not treat people with dignity regarding these issues is heart breaking. I realize this is a major first world problem- but today, I'm done!! The system is so debilitating for people and it makes me angry, frustrated, and sad. Even if I was a millionaire, it would be frustrating- it's the principle of the matter.

And then I get home and see this sweet face and I take a deep breath. We will not let them bring us down, but I will allow myself this moment to feel the frustration and give myself the space to be.

I am going to bury this post with something more uplifting from Kai, but I need it to be on record for my own sanity, even if no one else reads it.

A Halloween Retrospective- Updated for 2018

Some of you may not realize how much Halloween has been a part of my life. Really- my whole life. There are two reasons for this; 1. My mom loves to dress up (and dress up her kids) and 2. My birthday is two days after Halloween on November 2nd. I have had a number of birthdays that involved dressing up in costume. Since we make a big deal of Halloween here, we thought it would be good to have one place for all the pictures of all my costumes. So, I'll start with this year...
                                  2018- Harry Potter
On Halloween last year my mom already knew what we had to be this year- Harry Potter! We are HUGE HP fans and it was easy to turn my greased lightening car into the Hogwarts Express. I, of course, was Harry, my brother Liam was Ron Weasley, Addy was Hermione Grainger and my mom was Hedwig- the owl! Our April was Professor Trelawney. Dad worked up to the last minute as usual to get all of the details just right. My Grandma made the stickers for the sides of the train.

2017- Grease
My sister had the great idea that we should be the characters from Grease! We watched the show this summer and LOVED IT! My brother and sister are always playing the sound track around the house. Of course, we had to make my wheelchair into Greased Lightning! My Dad worked really hard to get this thing moving! It had some trouble rolling at first, but he always comes through to make sure it looks great!

2016- Red Baron
Last year I was a pilot! My airplane barely stayed together through Halloween, but it was still really cool. It had a spinning propeller. Dad had a great design, but the materials didn't hold up!

2015- Bull Rider
In 2015 we were cowboys and girls. I was a bull rider, as you can see from the giant bull on my chair! Mom and Dad were a little worried how this one was going to turn out- but it ended  up looking pretty good!

2014- Coast Guardsman
This year I wanted to dress like my Dad, so he made me a Coast Guard boat just like he drives. I had a uniform with my name on it too. It made a cool siren sound and had lights. My sibling and I were all first responders- Coastie, Policeman, and Firefighter.

2013- Firefighter
My fire truck had some fun accessories. It had all kinds of lights and a siren also.  My brother was a witch and my sister was a princess that year. Dad says anything with lights and sirens is a winner!
2012- Pirate
This was the first year we made a wheelchair costume. Mom was really excited to put it together. It had a skull on top of the mast with light up eyes, and skull lights all around the sides. My brother and sister were pirates too!

2011- Tin Man
This year we were all from the Wizard of Oz. I was the tin man- this isn't a great picture. My brother was the scarecrow and my sister was the lion. Mom was Dorothy of course.

2010- Punk Rocker
This was a great costume year! My mom called us The Decades, and we dressed from different eras. I was a punk rocker- can you see my nose ring and tattoos? My mom and sister were from the 50's and my brother was from the 70's- he had an afro and leisure suit.

2009- Scarecrow
This year we did the Wizard of Oz for the first time. We didn't have my sister yet, so I was the scarecrow and Liam was the lion. Mom was Dorothy and my Auntie Lexi was a witch. I had a costume birthday party that year. We had a little train ride come to our neighborhood and my mom made cool spider cupcakes.

2008- Mouse
This was the first year we lived in Rio Vista. I was a mouse and Liam was a pea pod.

2007- Curious George
On my second Halloween I had a costume party for my birthday. I was Curious George with a banana on my head. My mom was the Man with the Yellow Hat.

2006- Lobster
On my first Halloween I was almost 1 year old. My mom dressed me as a lobster! Little did we know that we would eventually move to Cape Cod!

To celebrate me turning 15 we signed up to do a triathlon! Today I raced the triathlon as MYSELF. I have always raced in the past with Mom a...
